In our previous post, we discussed bicyclist safety. It is important to remember that even if a bicyclist takes all necessary precautions, he or she may still be the victim of a bicycle accident involving a passing motorist. Any time this happens, a victim on a bicycle will be particularly susceptible to catastrophic personal injuries.
This is the story of an avid Michigan cyclist who was riding his bicycle around 6:00 a.m. as he headed to work. The 43-year-old man was struck down from behind by a passing motorist. He was transported to the hospital. He suffered head trauma and remains in critical condition.
Even more shocking, however, is that the driver who hit the bicyclist did not stop to help him, but instead had a total disregard for the injured man's well-being as he kept on driving right to the local casino, presumably to gamble.
A witness to the car accident watched as the hit-and-run driver continued driving. She decided to follow him to see where he was headed.
She relayed this information to the police who went to the casino and retrieved surveillance video, along with the driver's license plate number. The police were able to track down his address and went to the home.
Three people were arrested in connection with the investigation, including the hit-and-run driver who was found hiding in an upstairs bedroom. The police were also able to collect evidence from the vehicle, which had not yet been repaired.
Without the help of a witness, sometimes it can be very difficult to track down who is responsible for a hit-and-run accident. Thankfully, this case will not go unsolved, and the man who hit the bicyclist can be held responsible for the injuries he caused.
