During the year's first snowfall or rainstorm, it always seems people forget how to drive. They brake when they should accelerate, they forget to signal or they just altogether forget the basic rules of the road. The same may be true with off-road vehicles, as Michigan news outlets have reported at least three snowmobile accidents this week, during the state's first major snowfall.

Two of the crashes resulted in injuries to the riders. One proved fatal. State troopers said they weren't sure yet if alcohol played a role in the more serious accidents.

In one accident, troopers said the victims' stories didn't add up. The two men, both in their 30s, were riding their machines in white-out conditions when the first driver stopped suddenly; the second snowmobile ran into the first, and the men were thrown -- or so they claimed. Investigators said it looked as if the machines had been moved after the collision, in spite of the injured back and broken leg the drivers complained of.

Creeks and lakes proved dangerous in the other accidents. In the first, two 18-year-olds were injured when they tried to drive their machines over a creek with high banks.

Troopers are investigating the cause of the fatal second accident. A 41-year-old man was apparently crossing a lake when his snowmobile struck the embankment. The driver was thrown from the machine and died at the scene.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources notes that the state's trails are among the best in the country. The department also notes that drivers should not let the trails distract them from following standard off-road vehicle safety guidelines.

First and foremost, the DNR says, never operate any motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Second, always wear safety equipment, especially a helmet. Operate with the flow of traffic, staying as far right as possible.

And, sadly for the victim of the third accident, never ride alone. Go in pairs or groups, and always leave a travel plan with someone.
